I dare say there would have been less attention if Lineker had put a reasoned intelligent Tweet up, highlighting what was wrong with the policy. I agree rules should be applied fairly, but someone like Lineker with 8 million followers on Twitter and a £1.3 million salary is always going to attract a lot more attention whatever they say, than someone lower down the rung like Sugar. It doesn't matter how high profile you are, why let Lord Sugar's tweets slide under the radar concerning Labour but fall over themselves to appease the Tories? After all, they are the ones complaining about impartiality. The BBC should be consistent in their rules - they should be the same for all or none at all. Lord Sugar openly tweeted about not to vote for Corbyn & no action taken. The only difference here is Lineker took aim at the Government & they didn't like it. ![]() This has been raised before when people complained to the BBC when someone criticised & the response from the Beeb was always that 'the views represented were those of ******* & not the BBC'. The views expressed were his & his alone. GL never done anything to bad mouth the BBC, he criticised the Government, on his own time from his own Twitter account. Just because you post on your own account, doesn’t mean you can say anything you want without consequences. I imagine a lot of companies will have similar in their employment terms. I think this is all covered as part of the Senior Manager and Certification Regime from the FCA. No one is stopping free speech but there could be consequences if my words reflect negatively on my employers. I can get into serious trouble even if it was on a Twitter/Facebook out of work hours on my own account. It is made perfectly clear that about posting on Social Media anything that could damage the reputation of the company. ![]() Perhaps I misworded the “at work” bit, that is not the point. ![]() It sets a dangerous precedent IMO if individuals are shut down from making comments against aspects of government policy with which they disagree ![]() He did so as an individual, in his own time on his own private Twitter account. My sanctions may be less severe, being a less influential person in the company.īut he didn’t make any comments “at work”. In any event if I made unacceptable comments at work, it would have less reputational damage than if a senior Manager or director said them.
